Somewhere in a drawer there is a pair of merino boxers with a hole in them. Not a worn patch. A hole, roughly circular, at the top of the inner thigh or just under the seat, and it appeared after a season rather than a decade. The label said one hundred percent merino wool, and the man who bought them concluded that merino is a con.
It is not a con. It is the correct fibre put into the garment in the wrong yarn.
Wool has advantages in underwear that no synthetic has copied, and one enormous weakness that the good manufacturers solved decades ago and the careless ones still have not. Knowing the difference is most of what you need here, and it comes down to two things printed on the label.
Wool is graded by the average diameter of its fibres, measured in microns, and this single number determines almost everything about how a garment feels.
Ordinary wool sits somewhere in the high twenties and above. Merino is the fine end of the scale, generally accepted as anything under about 24 microns, and it is subdivided from there: fine merino in the range where most good base layers live, and superfine or ultrafine below that, which is what you find in expensive knitwear and the best underwear.
The reason it matters is prickle, and prickle is mechanical rather than allergic. A wool fibre pressed against skin either bends or it does not. A fine fibre buckles and you feel nothing. A coarse fibre stays rigid, presses in and triggers the nerve endings that report pain rather than touch. The threshold is usually put at around 30 microns, and what decides comfort is not the average so much as the proportion of fibres above that line. Which is why a garment can be sold as merino and still itch: the average is fine, the tail of the distribution is not.

Here is the awkward truth about the fibre. The finer you make it, the more comfortable it becomes and the weaker it gets.
A wool fibre is a protein filament with a scaled outer surface. It is elastic, it recovers well from bending, and it is not remotely abrasion resistant compared with nylon. Reduce its diameter to the point where it feels like nothing against the skin and you have also reduced its tensile strength to the point where friction destroys it.
Underwear is the most abrasive environment in a wardrobe. The inner thigh rubs against itself thousands of times a day. The seat compresses under body weight. The waistband is dragged over a hip. Add the scaled surface of wool, warmth, moisture and agitation and you also get felting, the fibres migrating and locking together into a denser, harder, thinner patch. That patch is where the hole appears.
A pure fine merino jersey therefore does two things in an underwear application. It wears through at the friction points, and it loses shape, because wool has good elastic recovery for a natural fibre and poor recovery compared with elastane. None of this is an argument against wool. It is an argument against a particular yarn.
The fix is a compound yarn, and both of the major merino houses describe it in almost identical terms: a continuous nylon filament at the centre, with merino fibres spun around the outside of it.
The nylon core carries the load and takes the tensile stress. The merino sheath does everything that touches you: the handle, the moisture management, the thermal behaviour, the odour resistance. You get wool against the skin and nylon doing the structural work, in a yarn that can be knitted on ordinary machinery.
The gain in durability is not marginal. It is the difference between a garment that survives a season and one that survives years of the same use, and it is why the serious outdoor brands moved to it for their lightest weights specifically, since the lightest fabrics have the least material to lose.
Read the composition label with this in mind and the numbers stop looking like dilution. A merino boxer brief listing eighty odd percent wool, a chunk of nylon and a few percent elastane is not a cheapened product. It is the engineered one. The suspicious label is the one that says pure merino at a low price, because the maker has either used a coarser grade than you want against the skin or built a garment that will not last merino boxer brief.
Merino fabric is sold by weight in grams per square metre, and the numbers in product names are usually the weight itself, which makes the range unusually legible once you know the convention.
Around 120 to 150. The lightweight end, and the right choice for underwear in most conditions. Around 150 to 200. The all round weight. Noticeably more substantial, better shape retention, warmer, and the sensible choice if merino underwear is your winter answer rather than your travel answer. Slower to dry, which matters if you are washing in a sink.
Above 200. Thermal territory. Scandinavian makers build genuinely heavy wool underwear at this weight, often in a terry or looped knit that traps air, and it is superb at minus ten and absurd at anything above about fifteen degrees. This is the merino claim that survives scrutiny best, and it is worth understanding why, because the mechanism explains the limits.
Odour on clothing is produced by bacteria metabolising the compounds in sweat. Wool interferes with that at several points. It absorbs moisture as vapour into the interior of the fibre rather than holding it as free liquid on the surface, which leaves less available water for bacteria to work in. Its keratin structure also binds a number of odour compounds within the fibre, holding them until a wash releases them.
The important word is property. This behaviour comes from the structure of the fibre itself, which means it does not wash out, wear off or degrade. The limit is that odour resistance is not the same as cleanliness. Merino will let you wear a pair for several days on a trip without becoming unpleasant. The most widely available properly built merino underwear there is, made in a corespun blend with the wool wrapped around a nylon core. The knit is fine, the seams are minimal, and the anatomical front panel is genuinely shaped rather than flat, which puts it ahead of most outdoor brands that treat underwear as an afterthought.
The weakness is the cut, which is slim through the leg and short in the rise, and unforgiving if you are broad. The lightest versions are still the ones that go first at the inner thigh. And it sits at a tier where you feel every pair you buy.

Built on the same principle, with ultrafine merino spun around a nylon core, at a weight that is genuinely everyday rather than technical. Of the big two this is the one that behaves most like ordinary underwear: it dries fast, it does not announce itself, and it holds shape better than the wool content suggests it should.
The weakness is range. The style choice is narrow, there is no proper brief in most seasons, and sizing is drawn for a North American frame. Availability outside the outdoor trade is patchy.
Swedish, made in Östersund, knitted in the looped Ullfrotté construction that traps air in a way flat jersey cannot. Devold has been working wool in Norway since the middle of the nineteenth century and it shows in the knitting rather than the marketing. The cut is more generous than the New Zealand brands, the fabric is honest, and the company is unusually transparent about where its wool comes from and what happens to it.
The weakness is availability, which outside Scandinavia and the outdoor specialists is thin, and a general lack of interest in fashion. If you want a merino garment that looks like modern underwear rather than modern base layer, look elsewhere.
The value entry, and a real one. British, direct to customer, and priced meaningfully below the big outdoor names for a garment that does the same job. The weakness is refinement. Construction is simpler, seam finishing is less considered, and the fit is less shaped than the premium options. It will do the work; it will not feel special doing it.
Plenty of men, and saying so saves money.

If you live somewhere hot and humid, the case weakens considerably. Merino regulates well across a wide range and is genuinely good in dry heat, but in sustained humidity it holds water, dries slowly and offers little a light cotton does not.

Strip out the marketing and the case narrows to something specific and defensible.
Merino underwear is for variable conditions and constrained laundry. It is for the man who leaves the house at six in the cold and is overheating indoors by ten. It is for a week away with hand luggage, where two pairs do the work of five. It is for the second night of a walk.
Outside those conditions it is a luxury, and a slightly fragile one, sold with claims that are mostly true but frequently overstated. Buy one pair in a core spun construction at a light weight and wear it for a fortnight. You will know by then whether the conditions of your life are the ones the fibre was made for. It is worth it if you move between temperatures during the day or travel with limited laundry, and it is not worth it if you sit in a climate controlled office and wash everything after one wear. Merino regulates across a wide temperature range and resists odour as a property of the fibre rather than a coating, so it stays wearable for several days. Because fine wool fibres have low abrasion resistance, and underwear is the most abrasive place in a wardrobe. The inner thigh, the seat and the waistband take constant friction, which combined with warmth and moisture also causes felting, a thinning of the fabric that becomes a hole. The finest grade you can find, which in practice means superfine merino rather than the standard grades used in outerwear. Comfort is governed by how many fibres exceed roughly 30 microns in diameter, since fibres above that threshold stay rigid against the skin and trigger prickle instead of bending. A low average with a small coarse tail feels like nothing. Brands that publish a micron figure generally do so because it is favourable.
For everyday and travel use, the lightweight range of roughly 120 to 150 grams per square metre, which disappears under a trouser and dries overnight. Step up to around 150 to 200 if you want winter warmth and better shape retention and can accept slower drying.
