Under the Suit: What to Wear on Your Wedding Day

What to wear under a wedding suit for fourteen hours in a hot room: the brief, the vest men forget, the socks, and the four problems each of them solves.

Consider the working conditions. You will be dressed by nine in the morning and still dressed at one the next morning. You will stand for photographs in full sun, sit through a ceremony, sit through a meal, stand up and speak, and then dance for three hours in a room that every wedding venue on earth heats to roughly the temperature of a greenhouse. Several hundred photographs will be taken of you, many by people who have had a drink and none of whom will warn you first.

This is the single most demanding day your wardrobe will ever face, and most men prepare for it by wearing whatever was clean.

The four problems to solve

Heat. You are in wool, or in a morning coat, under lights, in July. The garments underneath either move sweat away from your skin or hold it against you all day.

Time. Fourteen hours is longer than any garment gets tested in normal life. A waistband that is slightly wrong at ten in the morning is a genuine grievance by nine at night.

Photographs. Wedding trousers are cut clean and often fairly close. Anything that bunches, rides or prints through the cloth will do so permanently, in an album, on a wall, at your parents' house.

Movement. Kneeling, hugging, lifting children, being lifted yourself, dancing badly. Whatever you are wearing has to stay exactly where it started.

The brief

A supportive brief in a fine cotton, modal or merino blend, in a colour that disappears under your trouser cloth. No thigh seam means no ride and no print through the leg. The vest, which is the part men forget

This is the day the undershirt earns its entire reputation, and the reason tailors and morning dress hire shops have recommended one for generations.

A fitted vest sits between your skin and a shirt you have spent real money on.
