Somewhere in Australia right now, a man is standing at a barbecue in a pair of bright printed swim briefs, tongs in hand, entirely at peace with himself. He is not making a statement. He is not being ironic. He's just Australian, and this is what you wear when there's a pool within fifty metres and snags on the grill.
The rest of the world has a lot to learn from him.
"Budgie smugglers" is Australian slang for swim briefs, and it's younger than you'd think: the first recorded use was 1998, in the TV series The Games. Since then it has gone all the way to the dictionary and to parliament. Australia's politicians have been photographed in them, its surf lifesavers have worn them for a century as serious working kit, and the country long ago decided that a garment can be both a joke and a genuine institution at the same time. That's the Australian genius, and it's the exact opposite of the Anglo-Irish approach, which is to make the joke and then hide the garment for thirty years. The Locker Room Question: Getting Over the Fear of Being Seen in Briefs
In 2003 a few Sydney mates wrote "Budgy Smuggler" on some swim briefs for a laugh. Adam Linforth bought the business in 2008, when it was shifting about a thousand pairs a year, and grew it the slow way: no debt, its own Sydney factory, and a marketing strategy best described as leaning all the way in. Today Budgy Smuggler sells more than a hundred thousand pairs a year, opened a French office, and saw sales jump 50% after its smugglers appeared in Drive to Survive, gifted from one F1 driver to another.
Two things make the brand instructive for our purposes. First, the customisation engine: clubs, stag parties, workplaces and county GAA WhatsApp groups can order their own printed design from as few as ten pairs, which is why smugglers spread through swimming and sports clubs like gossip. Budgy Smuggler custom club smugglers Second, the tone. Their most famous marketing effort is a competition to find "Australia's Most Ordinary Rig," a celebration of the completely average body in a swim brief. No abs required. That is exactly the right attitude, and it's why they've won.
Here's the lesson to import, whether your barbecue is in Bondi or a back garden in Dublin with one working patio heater.
The swim brief is hosting kit. You can cook in it, swim in it, dry off in minutes and never sit through the afternoon in soggy knee-length shorts. Anyone who has spent four hours in wet boardshorts knows they're the real crime against comfort at any pool gathering. Buy two, because one is always still damp, and the pairs that survive a whole summer of chlorine and salt are a short list. The Best Swim Briefs You Can Actually Buy
