Fashion declares comebacks the way toddlers declare hunger: loudly, constantly, and with no paperwork. We know, because we've audited the underwear version; the "briefs are back" story has been announced roughly every five years since 2004 without a single sales figure attached.

Start with how bad it was
In 2018, YouGov polled Britain on its most disliked items of clothing. Speedos won. Not narrowly: 69% of Britons disliked them, which put the swim brief below Crocs and below leather trousers in the nation's affections. That is the baseline. Then read the sales data
Speedo, who would know, reported that sales and orders of its briefs across Europe, the Middle East and Africa rose more than 200% in 2023 compared with the year before. In the United States, brief sales rose 54% between 2020 and 2021 and kept climbing. In Australia they never fell; briefs remain among the brand's bestsellers there, worn without ceremony by lifeguards and grandads alike. By summer 2025 the company was telling the trade press that every cut was getting shorter, that its fastest-growing styles were the shortest ones, and that customers were visibly readier to show leg than they'd been in twenty years. None of which is new ground for the shape: competitive swimming capped men's racing suits at waist to knee in 2010 and has raced inside that line ever since. The fashion houses noticed
The premium end tells the same story with different receipts. CDLP, the Swedish house whose briefs feature all over this blog, says swim briefs now make up a quarter to a third of its swim sales. Todd Snyder reports briefs selling neck and neck with trunks. Miu Miu put swim briefs on the runway; Gucci, Bode and Zara followed into the category. When the mass brand, the premium brands and the runway all move the same direction in the same three years, that's not a vibe. That's a trend with an audit trail.
And then television finished the job
Every comeback needs a face. This one got several: the bathtub scene in Saltburn, the tennis whites of Challengers, and above all Walton Goggins in The White Lotus, a middle-aged man in a small Speedo, played entirely straight. Speedo itself credited that one with giving the brief "relevance outside sports." Why the pool leads and the drawer follows
