How to Read a Composition Label

The little tag inside your waistband tells you how a garment will behave and how long it will last. Here is how to read every line of it properly.

Most men cut it out. It scratches, it sits at the small of the back, and the moment it starts to irritate, out come the nail scissors. But that strip of printed satin is the only genuinely regulated piece of information attached to the garment.

Everything else is marketing. The fabric has a name somebody in a meeting chose, the fit has an adjective, and the photograph was shot on a man whose proportions are not yours. The composition line has none of that freedom, because in the UK, the EU and most other markets a maker is legally obliged to declare what the thing is made of, by percentage, in descending order, using recognised fibre names. It is the one place where they stop selling and start describing.

It will not tell you everything. But it will tell you how the garment feels, how it behaves in the wash, how warm it runs in August and roughly how many years you get out of it.

The percentages are by weight, which will mislead you

Fibre percentages are given by weight. Not by volume, not by surface area, and emphatically not by how much of the garment's behaviour that fibre controls.

A label reading 95 percent cotton and 5 percent elastane sounds like a cotton garment with a trace of something else in it. A rounding error. It is nothing of the sort. Elastane is spun as an extremely fine filament and knitted in either as a bare thread alongside the cotton or as a core wrapped in cotton yarn, so it appears in every single course of the knit while contributing almost no mass. Everywhere in the structure, nowhere in the weight. The skeleton is not most of your body weight either.

Which is why 3 percent and 8 percent feel like different categories of clothing rather than points on a scale. And a garment listing no elastane is not necessarily a garment without stretch, because a good rib knit stretches structurally through the geometry of its loops.

Read the small number first. It is the one that changes the garment.

The cotton family, from pure to ten percent

Four combinations cover most cotton underwear on sale, and each has a distinct personality.

100 percent cotton. All recovery coming from the knit itself. In a fine rib, the traditional continental construction, this is superb: cool, properly breathable, and good for years. In a cheap single jersey it is a disappointment, because jersey without elastane relaxes as it warms on the body and does not come back until it has been washed. Smooth, flat and no elastane means expect it to grow through the day.

95 percent cotton, 5 percent elastane. The default of the modern market and, for most men, the right answer. Enough elastane to hold the leg openings and the seat against the body without the fabric becoming a compression garment, and enough cotton left that it still behaves like cotton.

90 percent cotton, 10 percent elastane. Second skin territory: springier in the hand, gripping rather than sitting, running warmer because a denser and more elastic knit moves less air. It suits a close cut trunk, a sports brief, and men who chafe. It also ages less gracefully, there being more elastane to degrade, and when it goes the garment slackens everywhere at once rather than politely at the waistband.

Cotton and modal blends, often around half and half with a few percent elastane. Modal is softer, drapes more and carries dye deeper than cotton, so the blend looks and feels more expensive at the same weight. What you give up is a little abrasion resistance and a little of cotton's willingness to be washed hot and forgotten about. These are one family: regenerated cellulose. Wood pulp dissolved, extruded through fine holes, spun back into fibre. Neither natural the way cotton is nor synthetic the way polyester is, and the differences between them are differences of process The Fabric Bible: What Your Briefs Are Actually Made Of.

Modal is a viscose type fibre made from beech, engineered to be stronger wet than ordinary viscose, which is the only reason it survives washing. It is soft in a way cotton cannot match and it resists the chalky harshness cotton develops in hard water areas.

Micromodal is the same fibre spun finer. A label may say micro modal, MicroModal or simply modal, since the distinction is filament fineness rather than chemistry. Finer filaments mean more of them per unit weight, so a smoother surface and a fabric that feels almost liquid. Being finer, it is also more delicate micromodal trunk.

Lyocell is made by a closed loop solvent process that recovers and reuses most of the solvent, which is why it is treated as the more defensible option environmentally. It is stronger than modal wet and dry, slightly crisper in the hand, and it pills less. Tencel is not a different fibre; it is a brand under which lyocell and modal are sold, so "Tencel lyocell" gives you the trademark and the generic fibre in one breath, which is exactly right.

Bamboo is where labels get tested. Bamboo can be processed mechanically into a linen like fibre, and almost nobody does, because it is expensive and the result is coarse. What is sold as bamboo underwear is nearly always bamboo pulp put through the viscose process, producing a fibre chemically indistinguishable from other viscose. An honest label therefore says "viscose from bamboo", and regulators in several markets have pushed brands towards that wording. A label claiming simply "100 percent bamboo" leans on an impression of naturalness the fibre has not earned. It is a decent material: soft, well draping, not especially durable, and not the vegetable it is dressed as.

Polyester, polyamide and where nylon hides

Two synthetics dominate, they are not interchangeable, and the label distinguishes them properly even when the marketing does not Moisture-Wicking, Antibacterial, Four-Way Stretch: What the Claims Actually Mean.

Polyester is stiff, cheap, hydrophobic and very good at one job: moving liquid water along the outside of the fibre to where it can evaporate. In a running brief or a base layer that is exactly what you want. Under a suit for ten hours it is a mistake, because polyester does not absorb sweat, it relocates it, and once you exceed its capacity to relocate you are wearing a plastic bag. It holds odour too, which is a real property of the fibre surface and not a slur.

Polyamide is what American labels call nylon. It is softer, smoother, stronger and dearer: a slippery hand, good dye uptake, slightly more affinity for water. Which is why it turns up in the good stuff, in swimwear, in fine seamless knits, and as the body fabric of expensive sports underwear where polyester would feel cheap. It also hides where you will not look for it, in the elastic of a waistband, the binding round a leg opening and the mesh gusset of a technical brief, none of which need appear in the main composition line at all.

Merino, and why the blend matters more than the wool

A merino label needs reading twice. The word merino tells you the sheep and nothing about fibre diameter, which is the property deciding whether the garment is glorious or itchy. Diameter is measured in microns, finer is softer and dearer, and good makers print it. The ones who do not are usually silent for a reason.

Pure merino next to the skin is warm when wet, resistant to odour over several wearings, and structurally fragile in a garment stretched over a hip hundreds of times a year. Which is why almost all merino underwear is blended, typically with a few percent nylon for abrasion resistance and a little elastane for recovery. Read the merino percentage as a warmth and odour figure and the nylon percentage as a lifespan figure. High wool and no nylon is a beautiful thing that will not last merino blend boxer brief. Low wool and a lot of polyester is a synthetic garment wearing a rustic label.

The waistband has its own composition, and it is not on the label

Here is the omission that costs men the most money.

The composition line describes the body fabric. It does not, usually, describe the waistband, which is a separately manufactured component woven or knitted elsewhere, bought in, and attached at the end. Its own composition is typically a nylon or polyester ground carrying a rubber or elastane core, and none of that need appear on the tag when the band counts as trim rather than as part of the garment.

Which would be a footnote, except that the waistband is the component that fails first in the overwhelming majority of underwear. The cotton is fine. The seams are fine. The elastic has stopped coming back, and a brief whose band has gone is finished.

So your hands have to do what the label will not. Stretch about ten centimetres of the band and let go. It should return instantly and completely. Slow return, or return to a slightly longer length, means the elastic is already tired, and tired on the shelf means dead within the year. What the care symbols actually instruct

The symbols beneath the composition line are a real international system, and each is an instruction with a specific meaning rather than a suggestion.

The tub shape is washing. A number inside it is the maximum water temperature in degrees Celsius, and maximum is the operative word: 40 on the label means 30 is fine and usually better. A bar underneath means reduced mechanical action, so a gentler cycle; two bars means very gentle. A hand in the tub means hand wash. A cross through the tub means do not wash it in water at all, which on underwear should send you back to the rail.

The square is drying, and a circle inside it is tumble drying, one dot for low heat and two for normal. A cross through that circle is the symbol to obey most religiously of all, because heat is what kills elastane, and the difference between a brief that lasts four years and one that lasts one is very often nothing more than the dryer.

The iron shape is ironing, with dots for temperature: one is low, around 110 degrees, which is where you keep elastane and synthetics; two is medium; three is high, for cotton and linen. The circle on its own is professional cleaning, and the letters inside tell the cleaner which solvent to use rather than telling you anything. The remaining symbol governs bleaching, and crossed through it means no bleach of any kind, including the oxygen based whiteners in many ordinary detergents.

Brand names, fibre names, and the red flags

Separate the two kinds of word on a label, because brands work hard to blur them. Lycra is a trademark for elastane; spandex is the American generic term for the same fibre. Tencel covers lyocell and modal. Supima is a trademark for American grown extra long staple pima cotton. Coolmax is an engineered polyester. In every case the generic fibre still has to appear on the composition line, so the trademark is additional information rather than a substitute, and it is often a real quality signal, since licensed yarns come with specifications the licensee must meet. But it is never a different fibre from the generic printed beside it, and a large premium charged purely for a trademark you cannot distinguish by touch is a licensing fee with your name on it Against the Sports Brand Tax.

Then the red flags, in rough order of how much they will cost you.

A garment sold as fitted, slim or body defining with no elastane at all, in a fabric that is plainly not a rib. It will fit in the shop and bag at the seat by lunchtime on the second wearing.

A modal or viscose blend priced as a technical fabric. Modal is comfortable, not technical. If a brand charges performance money for a fibre that absorbs moisture and holds it, you are paying for the word rather than the behaviour cotton modal blend brief.

Bamboo with no mention of viscose or rayon. Not a disaster, but a brand loose about that tends to be loose about other things.

Elastane above about 12 percent in something sold as everyday cotton underwear. That is a compression garment with a cotton facing and it will run hot.

And the quiet one: a composition line that is technically complete and tells you nothing. No fibre grade, no micron count, no staple length, no waistband information. Everything a label omits is a decision somebody made, and makers proud of their yarn tend to say so on the tag.

The label is not the whole garment, and a man who reads only the label will still buy the odd disappointment. But it costs nothing to read, it is the only part of the pitch legally obliged to be true, and once you can decode it in ten seconds you stop paying for fabric you did not want supima cotton brief. What does 95 percent cotton and 5 percent elastane mean?

It means the fabric is 95 percent cotton and 5 percent elastane by weight, and that small elastane figure does far more work than it looks like. Elastane is spun as a very fine filament and knitted through the whole structure, so it can be present in every row while adding almost no mass. What is the difference between polyamide and nylon?

None worth worrying about. Nylon is a type of polyamide, and the two words describe the same family of fibres in different markets: British and European labels normally say polyamide, American ones normally say nylon. Compared with polyester it is softer, smoother, stronger and more expensive, which is why it appears in swimwear, in fine seamless knits, in better sports underwear, and as the reinforcement at the heel and toe of a decent sock.

How much elastane should underwear have?

For everyday cotton underwear, around 5 percent is the sweet spot: enough recovery to hold shape, not so much that the garment compresses or runs hot. Around 10 percent gives a close second skin fit that suits trunks, sports briefs and anyone who chafes, at the cost of more warmth and a shorter life, since elastane is the fibre that degrades first. Zero elastane is excellent in a proper rib knit, which stretches structurally, and disappointing in plain jersey, which simply grows.
