The best socks for sweaty feet are wool, not cotton. Why feet sweat so much, what causes the smell, and the shoe rotation habit that fixes most of it.

There is a moment at the end of a long day when the shoes come off and the sock is a visibly darker colour at the ball of the foot than it was that morning. Most people register it and move on. A significant minority have quietly organised parts of their life around it: which houses are shoes-off houses, which shoes can be removed in company.

Sweaty feet are not a hygiene failure and not a character defect. They are a consequence of where your sweat glands happen to be concentrated and what you put over them for ten hours a day. This is also one of the most fixable problems in clothing, and almost nobody attacks it in the right order.

The shops suggest a spray. The spray is roughly seventh on the list.

Your feet are the wettest skin you own

Sweat glands are not distributed evenly. The eccrine glands that produce watery sweat cluster most densely on the palms and the soles, and the difference is not marginal. Figures commonly given put the sole at around six hundred glands per square centimetre against perhaps sixty to eighty on the trunk, with a quarter of a million glands per foot as the usual quoted total.

That density has nothing to do with cooling. Palm and sole sweating is largely emotional rather than thermal: it responds to stress and alertness rather than heat, and the leading explanation is grip. A very slightly damp sole grips better than a bone-dry one.

Then consider what we do with that skin. A shoe is a sealed box, lined, closed at both ends, laced tight across the top. The one exit for water vapour is the ankle opening, usually covered by a trouser. Fit a synthetic lining and a foam insole and you have built something closer to a bag than a garment.

High moisture load, poor escape route. Everything that follows addresses one of those two facts.

Cotton is the worst available answer

Cotton absorbs, which sounds like what you want and is the opposite. Absorbing means the fibre takes water into itself and holds it there. Wicking, which is what you need, means moving water through the fabric and presenting it to the air to evaporate. Inside a shoe that means a sock which saturates by mid-morning and then stays saturated, because the air around it is already at high humidity and the water has nowhere to go. The fabric stops being a moisture management system and becomes a wet compress held against your skin by a laced upper.

Three things follow. Wet skin softens, and soft skin abrades easily, which is the mechanism behind most blisters. Wet cotton loses its loft, so whatever cushioning you paid for flattens. Wool beats cotton, and beats synthetic where it counts

Merino is the answer for most people with sweaty feet, which surprises anyone who files wool under winter.

Wool takes up water vapour into the interior of the fibre, where the moisture is bound rather than sitting free on the surface. So a wool sock can carry a serious load of sweat and still feel dry against the skin, and it keeps releasing that moisture to the air rather than pooling it. Where they lose badly is odour. Polyester holds the oily residues of sweat on its surface, and the bacteria most associated with textile smell grow better on it than on natural fibres. Wool binds much of the odorous material inside the fibre where your nose cannot reach it. Anyone who has worn merino for three days on a hill knows this without needing the study.

The smell is not the sweat

This changes what you should be doing about it.

Eccrine sweat is essentially water with salt and a little urea and amino acid in it, and freshly produced it is close to odourless. The smell is manufactured afterwards, by bacteria living on the skin, which metabolise that sweat and the shed skin around it into small volatile molecules.

On the sole, staphylococci dominate almost completely, and the compound they are best known for producing is isovaleric acid, made from the amino acid leucine. That is the cheesy, acidic note everybody recognises, and it is no coincidence that related organisms produce it deliberately in certain cheeses. Other bacteria nearby produce the sulphur compounds that supply the sharper part.

So you can reduce the sweat, reduce the bacteria, or reduce the time they spend together in warm damp conditions. The third is easiest and most neglected.

Rotate your shoes, which is the thing nobody does

If you take one instruction from this piece, take this one: never wear the same pair of shoes two days running.

Shoes worn for a full day are genuinely wet inside. Not damp, wet, and the moisture has gone into the insole foam, the lining and the upper, where a few hours in a dark hallway will not shift it. Put them on again the next morning and you start with your foot in a humid environment and a bacterial population that was never interrupted.

Give a pair a full day off and that changes completely. Twenty four hours of open air usually dries the lining properly, and a dry lining is a far less hospitable place. Two pairs alternating solves more of this than any sock will.

Help the drying along. Loosen the laces fully and pull the tongue forward so the shoe sits open, and take the insole out if it lifts. Keep shoes off radiators, which cook leather and adhesive.

Cedar shoe trees earn their place here. The cedar absorbs moisture, the wood holds the shape while the leather dries so it does not set into creases, and the timber has a long reputation for discouraging fungal growth. Rotate the socks, and change them at midday

The midday change is the underrated move. Anyone standing all day or working a long shift should carry a spare pair and swap at lunchtime. It takes a minute and the difference in the last four hours is out of all proportion to the effort. What actually helps inside the shoe

A perfect sock inside a sealed shoe is still inside a sealed shoe.

Linings matter more than uppers. An unlined or leather-lined shoe manages moisture far better than one lined in synthetic, because leather absorbs and slowly releases where a synthetic lining simply blocks. Insoles are consumable. Foam that has been soaked and dried a few hundred times is a reservoir. Take the old one out, check whether it is the source of the smell, and replace it rather than treating the whole shoe activated charcoal insole. Talc, by contrast, absorbs briefly and then forms a paste.

Antimicrobial treatments, and which claims survive

Every sport sock now claims to be antimicrobial. Some of that is real and a good deal is decoration.

Silver has the most substance behind it. Silver ions genuinely inhibit bacterial growth, and a sock with silver knitted in as a metallised fibre keeps working because the metal is part of the structure. The distinction that matters is between silver in the yarn and silver applied as a surface finish, because a topical finish washes out and the label rarely tells you which you bought. Copper works by a related route. Zinc oxide and plant extract finishes have a shorter working life than the packaging implies.

Be sceptical of any claim that a treated sock removes the need to wash properly, or that it addresses the shoe. Bacteria live on your skin and in your lining as well as in the fabric, so a treated sock has dealt with a third of the problem silver yarn sports sock.

When it stops being a sock problem

Everything above assumes an ordinary foot in an ordinary shoe. Some people sweat well beyond that, and it is worth naming plainly.

Heavy sweating that soaks through socks regardless of fibre, that happens in cool weather and at rest, that leaves the skin of the sole white and macerated, or that has started recently without any change in your life, is worth mentioning to a doctor or a pharmacist. Excessive sweating localised to palms and soles has a name and a set of established treatments, from strong aluminium chloride preparations through to iontophoresis, none of which you can buy in a sock shop. The same goes for persistent itching, peeling between the toes, thickened nails, or a smell that has changed character rather than intensified.

The order to do it in

Shoe rotation first, because it is free. Then replace the cotton. Then rotate socks and carry a spare pair. Then the shoes themselves, linings and insoles. Then, genuinely only then, a treated sock or an antiperspirant.

Each step makes the next work better, which is why the order is not arbitrary. Most people never fix this because they start at the end of that list and conclude that nothing helps. Merino wool blend socks, for most people, most of the time. Why do my feet smell even after washing?

Because the smell is not made by the sweat, it is made by bacteria working on the sweat, and those bacteria live on your skin and in your shoe lining as well as in your socks. Washing your feet removes the residue for a while, but the population rebuilds quickly in a warm damp shoe. On the sole, staphylococci convert amino acids from sweat into isovaleric acid, the cheesy note everyone recognises. How often should I change socks if my feet sweat a lot?

Daily as an absolute minimum, and twice a day if you are on your feet for a long shift or the weather is warm. A midday change is one of the highest-value habits available: it costs a minute and one extra pair, and it transforms the last few hours of the day.
