How to Wash Socks, and Where the Other One Went

How to wash socks properly: the right temperature, why softener wrecks wool, what the dryer does to elastic, and the real mechanics of the missing sock.

Somewhere in your house there is a small pile of single socks. Not one, a pile. Each arrived alone, was kept in the reasonable hope of a reunion, and has sat there long enough that you have forgotten which pair it came from.

The pile is the visible symptom. The invisible one is that most socks do not wear out so much as get cooked, softened and tumbled into uselessness, after which the owner concludes socks are not made the way they used to be.

Both problems have mechanical explanations. The missing sock is not a mystery. It is a gap, a gasket and a duvet cover.

Thirty degrees, and why hot water is the enemy

Wash socks at thirty degrees. That is the right default for nearly every load you will ever run.

The reason is elastane, sold also as spandex or Lycra, present in almost every sock you own even when the label says wool or cotton. Elastane is a segmented polymer: soft coiled sections that stretch, hard sections that pull them back. Heat softens the hard sections, the polymer relaxes into a new shape, and the recovery is gone permanently.

Thirty with a decent enzyme detergent removes body soil and sweat without difficulty. Sixty is a tool rather than a setting, and the reason to reach for it is a fungal infection in the house. Drop the spin speed too, because the spin does the most mechanical work of the cycle.

Inside out, every time

Turning socks inside out takes four seconds a pair and does two jobs.

The first is cleaning. The dirt in a sock is almost entirely on the inside: skin cells, sebum, sweat residue and the fine grit that works through the knit during the day. Inside out, that surface faces the water and the detergent directly. It is why the inside of a sock stays grey while the outside looks clean.

The second is pilling. Pills form when loose fibre ends get rubbed and tangled into small balls, and the drum and everything else in the load are what rub them. Fabric softener is not a neutral choice

Softener deposits a thin waxy cationic film across the fibre surface. That film is a lubricant, which is what makes a towel feel plush in the shop and useless in the bathroom. On a sock the damage differs by fibre.

On wool it is actively counterproductive. Wool is already soft, and its functional advantage is that it moves water vapour into and out of the fibre. On technical socks it is worse. Wicking works by capillary action through the fine spaces between filaments. Fill those spaces with wax and the capillaries stop, so the sock no longer moves sweat and holds odour more stubbornly, because you have laminated grease over the bacteria's food supply The Sweaty Feet Problem, Solved.

It also degrades the silicone grip strips inside no-show and sports socks, which need a clean surface. If you want socks to feel soft, buy better yarn wool and delicates detergent.

Sort by type, not by colour

Colour sorting is a habit from an era of unstable dyes. Modern sock dyes bleed far less than people assume, and what actually protects a sock is what it gets rubbed against.

Denim abrades: jeans and a fine merino sock in one drum for an hour is a slow sanding operation. Towels shed, and terry lint embeds in fine knits, so a dark dress sock goes permanently fuzzy. Rivets and zips pull threads that do not come back.

The wash bag is the only real fix for the missing sock

Everything else here makes socks last longer. The mesh wash bag is the only thing that stops them disappearing.

A zipped mesh bag does three jobs at once. It keeps a pair together, so what goes in as a pair comes out as a pair. It stops socks being stretched around the drum ribs or wound into a duvet cover. And it puts a barrier between fine knits and anything with a hook on it. Do not overfill it, because a bag stuffed tight does not wash properly zipped mesh laundry bag.

The alternative is sock clips, small silicone rings holding a pair together through the cycle. They work, and they survive the dryer, which a bag does not always. The objection is that clipping every pair by hand is a chore silicone sock clips.

The dryer is what kills the elastic

This is the most destructive thing done to socks in ordinary households.

A tumble dryer combines the two conditions elastane cannot survive: sustained heat and continuous flexing while that heat is applied. That is exactly what lets the polymer relax and reset at a new length. You will not see it after one cycle. You will see it after thirty, when the cuff no longer grips and the sock slides into your shoe by lunchtime.

The dryer also destroys the silicone grippers in no-show socks. Heat degrades the silicone and softens the adhesive holding it on, and once a gripper has lifted it never grips again. For wool it does something worse: it felts. Heat, moisture and agitation together make the microscopic scales on the fibre interlock permanently, and one hot cycle can take a merino sock two sizes down. There is no reversing it.

Dry wool flat, and hang the rest by the toe

Wet wool is heavy and weak. The fibres slide against each other more readily when saturated, so hanging a wet wool sock by its cuff means hours of its own weight pulling the leg long and the cuff loose, until the sock changes shape for good.

Lay wool and heavy knits flat, on a towel or a mesh rack, and reshape them while damp: straighten the leg, square the heel, pat the foot back to width.

Everything else can hang, pegged by the toe rather than the cuff, so the weight pulls on the part with no elastic in it. Never dry socks on a radiator, which is the tumble dryer's problem in slow motion.

Work socks and sports socks need a soak

A sock worn for a ten-hour shift in a boot, or through a hard session in a synthetic trainer, is not carrying ordinary soil, and an ordinary cycle asks too little.

The problem is oil. Sweat leaves fatty residues that a short cool wash lifts only partly, and those residues are what the odour-forming bacteria live on. It is why a sock can come out smelling clean, go onto a warm foot and smell like a gym bag within ten minutes.

The fix is a pre-soak. Half an hour to a few hours in oxygen bleach, which is sodium percarbonate, then a normal wash. It releases hydrogen peroxide as it dissolves, breaking down both staining and residue, and it is safe on colours and most fibres. Use warm water rather than hot, because it barely activates in cold oxygen bleach powder.

For the wash use a full dose of detergent with a real enzyme package, specifically lipases and proteases, which digest fats and proteins rather than merely lifting them enzyme laundry detergent. Bleach: when it works and when it wrecks the fibre

Two different products are sold as bleach and confusing them is expensive.

Oxygen bleach, the powder above, is safe on nearly everything: greying white sports socks, set-in odour, general refreshing, and it can be used regularly without structural harm.

Chlorine bleach is another matter. On pure white cotton with no elastane it works. But almost no sock is pure cotton now. Chlorine attacks elastane directly, so one careless soak destroys the recovery in the cuff of every sock in the bucket. It yellows nylon rather than whitening it. On wool it damages the protein structure beyond recovery.

So: oxygen bleach for anything, chlorine for plain white cotton only and rarely. Greying whites are often mineral deposit from hard water rather than dirt, in which case less detergent and a water softener do more than any bleach How to Wash Underwear Properly.

Where the sock actually goes

Now the pile in the drawer, which has unglamorous answers.

The drum gap. On a front loader there is a small clearance between the inner drum and the outer tub, and on many machines the rim is wide enough for a thin, wet, compressed sock to be forced through by the spin. It then works into the pump filter. Clean the filter and you will find at least one.

The door gasket. The rubber boot around a front loader door has a deep fold that traps small items, and a sock can sit there through the whole cycle and come out looking unwashed. Run a hand round it after every load.

The duvet cover, the great uncelebrated culprit. It is a bag with a small opening, and in a rotating drum it opens, swallows everything smaller than itself and closes again. Socks come out hidden and go onto the line folded into a corner.

Under and behind the machine. A sock dropped between basket and drum lands somewhere, often the strip of dark floor nobody has looked at in three years.

Inside a trouser leg or a sleeve. Static and agitation push small items into openings, and a sock in a jumper sleeve goes into the wardrobe with the jumper and turns up next winter.

And the least satisfying answer, frequently correct: it was never washed. It is under the bed, in the car, or in the shoe you have not worn since March.

Buy the same sock repeatedly

The permanent solution has nothing to do with laundry technique.

Find a sock you like, in the height and fibre you actually wear, and buy it six or eight pairs deep in one colour. Every sock in that group is interchangeable with every other, so a lost sock leaves no orphan and the survivor rejoins the pool. Sorting stops as well, because sorting a drawer of identical socks is just counting. Do it per category: one everyday sock, one sport sock, one wool sock dark ribbed everyday sock.

Questions people ask

What temperature should I wash socks at?

Thirty degrees for almost everything. Modern detergents are formulated for low temperatures and thirty removes sweat and body soil comfortably, while doing the least damage to the elastane that keeps a sock gripping your calf and hugging your instep. Heat destroys that elastane, and the loss is permanent rather than temporary. Forty is acceptable for plain cotton you are not precious about. The one genuine reason to use sixty is a fungal infection such as athlete's foot in the household, because a cool wash does not reliably deal with it.

Should you turn socks inside out to wash them?

Yes, and it is one of the few laundry habits worth the extra seconds. Mostly into four places. Thin wet socks get forced through the gap between the inner drum and the outer tub on front loaders, ending up in the outer tub or the pump filter, which is worth cleaning for that reason alone. They lodge in the fold of the rubber door gasket and sit out the whole cycle. They get swallowed by duvet covers, which behave like bags in a rotating drum, and come out hidden in the corners.
