The Sock Fabric Bible: Cotton, Merino, Nylon and the Rest
The best sock material for feet depends entirely on the job. Cotton, merino, nylon, acrylic and bamboo compared honestly, plus why the knit matters more.

Empty the odd-sock corner of any drawer and lay the survivors out. The pattern arrives immediately and it is faintly unsettling. Not one hole in a random position. The same hole, in the same spot, on the same foot, across pairs bought years apart from different shops in different fibres.
People treat this as bad luck. It is not. A hole is a record: it sits where a part of your foot pressed a sock against a shoe, several thousand times, until the yarn gave up. Read that way, a sock tells you things about your gait, your toenails and your footwear that nothing else in your wardrobe will. They are also, mostly, fixable, though not by buying thicker socks, which is the usual instinct and usually wrong.
Fabric does not fail from pressure alone. A sock under your arch is loaded all day and lasts forever, because the arch barely moves relative to the fabric.
What destroys a sock is shear: fabric dragged sideways across a surface while under load. Every step involves a small slip between foot and sock, and between sock and shoe, and that rubbing under pressure is what saws through yarn. So holes cluster where load and movement coincide, and they land in the same spots on the same person indefinitely.
The commonest hole in the world, and the one with the most possible causes, so work through them in order.
The toenail comes first. A nail cut in a curve leaves sharp corners, and a nail left long presents a hard edge at the point of maximum pressure. Either turns your toe into a blunt blade. A neat slit or a small puncture, rather than a patch of thinning, means the nail is doing it, and no sock will survive that.
Then shoe length. A shoe half a size short does not feel tight, it just means the toe reaches the end of the box and stays there. Allow a thumb's width beyond the longest toe when standing, and the longest toe is not always the big one.
Then the shape of the box: a tapered one on a squarer foot pushes the big toe inwards and loads its side, which is why some people hole the edge rather than the top. Then gait, because toeing off hard or rolling inward at the end of the stride loads and twists the toe more than it should be. Holes under the ball are less common and more informative. The ball is where the foot pivots: at the end of every step the heel lifts and the body rotates over the metatarsal heads, so that square inch takes peak pressure and rotational shear in the same instant. Hard floors make it worse, which is why nurses and warehouse staff go through socks at a rate desk workers find baffling. So does a seam or ridge on the insole sitting under the ball, so run a finger along the footbed: a raised join or a rough patch is a file that will work through a sock in weeks.
The heel is simpler. It rubs against the counter, the stiffened cup at the back of the shoe, and if the shoe is slightly too big or the counter has softened with age, the heel lifts on every stride and drags the sock up and down the lining. Heel holes in a slip-on or an unlaced boot are almost always that. The other cause is skin, because dry, hard skin at the back of the heel is genuinely abrasive, and a pumice stone is cheaper than replacing socks.
Work out which death you are dealing with before buying anything, because they call for opposite responses.
Abrasion wear looks like thinning. The fabric goes semi-transparent, then fuzzy, then opens, and you can see it coming for weeks by holding the sock up to a window.
Elastic failure looks like a sock with plenty of fabric that no longer holds shape: cuff not gripping, leg bagging, foot sliding about inside. This annoys people, because the pure fibre feels like the virtuous choice and it is not.
Cotton and wool are staple fibres: short lengths twisted into yarn, holding together by friction between the individual fibres. Rub that yarn repeatedly and fibres work loose at the surface, the yarn thins, and eventually the twist has nothing left to hold.
Nylon is a continuous filament, extruded as one unbroken strand, so there are no fibre ends to work loose and its abrasion resistance is in a different class. Too little nylon and the sock wears out; too much and you lose the warmth and odour resistance that made you want wool at all. A quarter to a third nylon with a percent or two of elastane is the shape of a sensible hard-working sock The Best Wool Socks You Can Actually Buy.
Cheap socks are knitted from one yarn, uniformly, cuff to toe: faster, simpler, and it means the toe is made from the same material as the ankle, which is subject to no abrasion at all.
A properly designed sock changes yarn at the heel and toe, feeding an extra strand of nylon alongside the main yarn so both are knitted into the same stitches. The technique is called plating, and it puts the natural fibre against your skin and the tough filament against the shoe.
Turn a sock inside out and the story takes five seconds. On a reinforced toe the fabric is visibly denser than over the instep, often slightly different in colour because added nylon takes dye differently, with a clean boundary line across the foot. On an unreinforced sock there is no line. Here is the fix people almost never think of.
A new footbed has a smooth textile or leather surface with a low friction finish. After a year or two that finish is gone, and what remains is rough, sweat-hardened and sometimes crazed. Your sock is then pressed against something with the working properties of fine abrasive paper.
Which explains the most reliable clue in the whole subject: the same-foot rule. If you hole the left toe and never the right, and both feet are the same size, it is not your feet that are asymmetric. It is a shoe. Take both insoles out and compare them. A fresh insole protects socks and often tightens up a shoe that had gone loose replacement cushioned shoe insole. Nobody wants toenails to be the answer. They very often are. Cut them straight across rather than curving down at the sides, leave them just short of the end of the toe, and take the sharp corners off with a file. That last step is the one people skip and it matters most, because a filed corner cannot catch a knitted loop and a cut corner can. Check the small toes too: a curled little toe with a thickened nail holes the side of a sock as efficiently as any big toe.
Then rotation. A sock left off for a day dries fully, which matters because damp fibres abrade more readily than dry ones, and its elastane recovers, because elastic held under tension all day needs time unloaded to return to its resting length. Darning is a genuinely good skill that has lately been oversold as a moral position. It is worth doing under specific conditions and a waste of an evening outside them.
Darn when the sock is otherwise sound: the cuff still grips, the leg still holds shape, and the fabric everywhere apart from the hole is still opaque against the light. Darn when the hole is small with clean edges, which means catching it early. And darn when the sock is worth the time, which a good merino or a hand linked dress sock is.
Stretch the fabric over a curved surface, a darning mushroom or the back of a smooth spoon, run a grid of stitches across the hole one way, then weave the other way through them over and under. Use a yarn close to the sock's own weight, because a heavy darn in thin fabric makes a lump that will blister you wool darning yarn and needle kit. Better still, act before there is a hole: a thinning patch takes a spiral of running stitch, invisible in wear, about two minutes.
Stop when the fabric around the hole is thin too, because you will be darning a fresh hole beside the old darn within a fortnight. Stop when the elastic has gone, because a repaired sock that slides will fail somewhere else instead. And stop when the sock was cheap, because an hour of your life is worth more than a supermarket sock, and pretending otherwise is not thrift, it is a hobby wearing thrift's coat.
A sock, usefully reframed, is a wear indicator you happen to be wearing.
Consistent toe holes point at nails or shoe length. Ball holes point at the surface under your foot and the hours you spend standing on it. Heel holes point at a shoe that is not holding your heel. One-sided wear points at one shoe. Holes everywhere at once, on socks that also sag, point at a laundry routine.
That is a better return than most garments give you. Which is why the advice is not thicker socks, a change that mostly makes shoes fit worse and moves the wear rather than removing it. Buy nylon where the abrasion is, rotate, look at what is under your foot before you look at what is around it, and spend three minutes a month on your toenails merino nylon blend hiking sock.
Because wear inside a shoe is not random. Holes form where high pressure and repeated sideways movement happen together, and those points are fixed by the shape of your feet, your gait and your footwear. The big toe, the ball of the foot and the heel are where load and shear coincide, so that is where fabric fails. The same-place pattern repeating across different pairs is a sign that the cause is you and your shoes rather than the socks, which is good news, because those are the things you can actually change.

Considerably, and you can verify the reinforcement yourself in seconds. Turn the sock inside out and look at the toe: a reinforced one shows visibly denser fabric with a clean boundary line where the extra nylon starts, often in a slightly different shade because nylon takes dye differently. Nylon is a continuous filament, so it has none of the loose fibre ends that make cotton and wool abrade away. Check that the reinforcement wraps over the top of the toes, not just the sole, since the top is where a toenail attacks.
Worth it for a good sock caught early, not worth it otherwise. Darn when the cuff still grips, the rest of the fabric is still opaque against the light and the hole has clean edges, and use a yarn close to the original weight so the repair does not form a lump that blisters you. It is not worth darning a sock whose elastic has gone, because it will slide and fail somewhere else, and not worth darning fabric that is thin all round the hole. Enough that no pair is worn two days running, which for most people means at least seven of any style worn daily. Socks need a full day off to dry out completely and to let the elastane return to its resting length, and a pair that gets neither wears out markedly faster. Damp fibres abrade more readily than dry ones, and slack elastic lets the sock slide against the foot, which accelerates the abrasion that makes holes.
