The Long-Haul Flight Kit

What to wear on a long haul flight, from the skin outwards. Why cotton fails in dry cabin air, what compression socks really do, and a plan for a lost bag.

Twelve hours is not a journey. It is a small residency, and you should furnish it accordingly.

Most men treat the outfit for a long flight as a non-decision. Whatever is comfortable, whatever is loose, whatever was on top of the pile. Then they spend half a day in a pressurised tube at eleven thousand metres, in the same position, in air drier than any desert, arrive at Changi at six in the morning feeling like something scraped out of a drain, and blame the flight.

Some of that is unavoidable. Time zones are time zones. But a meaningful share of arrival misery is a clothing problem, and clothing problems have solutions. What follows is the kit, plus the contingency that separates people who have travelled a lot from people who have not: what you do when the bag does not come off the belt.

The cabin is drier than you think, and that changes the fabric

Cabin air comes from outside the aircraft, and at cruising altitude there is essentially no moisture in it. It gets compressed and heated and fed into the cabin, and unless the aircraft is actively humidifying it, which most are not, relative humidity settles very low indeed. Published figures for older cabins put the flight deck at around two to three percent, first class around five, business around seven. Newer composite aircraft such as the A350 and 787 tolerate higher moisture and can carry humidifiers capable of lifting that into the twenties, but that is an option rather than a guarantee, and most of us are further back anyway.

For comparison, a comfortable indoor environment sits around forty to sixty percent. Many deserts are wetter than the average cabin.

What that does to you is straightforward. You lose water through breath and skin faster than you would on the ground, and you do not feel especially thirsty while it happens. Add the diuretic effect of the free wine and you can spend a long flight quietly going backwards on fluid without noticing.

What it does to your clothes is less obvious and more actionable. In very dry air, a fabric that manages moisture by absorbing it and holding it near the skin behaves badly: it pulls moisture from you and takes an age to give it back. Static becomes a live problem too, because dry air plus synthetic fabric plus a nylon seat cover means a small electric shock every time you stand VPL, Static and Other Trouser Problems.

Cotton is the wrong answer, and it is the answer everybody picks

Cotton is the default because cotton feels lovely for the first hour. Soft, familiar, and what is in the drawer.

The problem is the second hour. Cotton absorbs a great deal of moisture relative to its weight and holds onto it, with no meaningful mechanism for moving it away from the skin and no interest in drying quickly. On a normal day this barely matters, because you move around and the garment recovers.

On a flight, none of that happens. You sit in one position for hours and the seat back traps everything against you. The parts of you touching the seat are warm and unventilated and gently damp; the parts exposed to the vent are cold. A cotton brief gets damp early, stays damp for the whole sector, and goes properly cold every time the crew drop the cabin temperature for the sleep period, which they always do. Then you land and wear the same damp garment through another five hours of connection and immigration queue.

Cotton fails the second test too, which is odour. Cotton itself does not smell, but it is a hospitable environment for the bacteria that do, and after twelve hours of skin contact it will have acquired a certain character The Sweat Article: Moisture-Wicking Fabrics, Explained Properly.

Merino is the correct answer and it is not close

Wool solves all three problems at once, which is unusual for any material.

It moves moisture as vapour through the fibre itself rather than only along the surface, so it keeps feeling dry while carrying water a cotton garment would be wearing on the outside of itself. It regulates temperature in both directions, which matters on a flight where you are alternately too warm under a blanket and too cold under a vent. And it resists odour to a degree that seems implausible until you have worn one garment for three days and found it perfectly acceptable. Fine merino, in the weights used for underwear, is not itchy and bears no resemblance to a 1970s jumper.

The kit for a twelve hour sector, from the skin outwards:

Trousers with a soft waistband, and not for reasons of dignity. Abdominal bloating in the air is real, to do with gas expanding at lower cabin pressure, and a rigid waistband against it for twelve hours is miserable.

Compression socks, and what the evidence actually says

Compression socks are the one item of long-haul kit surrounded by serious medical claims, so be careful rather than enthusiastic.

The World Health Organization's WRIGHT project, reported in 2007, found the risk of venous thromboembolism roughly doubles after travel of four hours or more, and that this applies to sitting still on a train or in a car as much as on a plane. Doubling sounds alarming until you see the absolute number, which the same work put at roughly one in six thousand for a journey over four hours, and the risk stays somewhat elevated for a few weeks afterwards.

On the socks, the evidence is a Cochrane review of randomised trials in airline passengers, covering a dozen trials and getting on for three thousand participants, all on flights over five hours. The finding on symptomless deep vein thrombosis is strong: far fewer stocking wearers developed one, rated high certainty evidence. Stockings also clearly reduced leg swelling, though the certainty is lower there because the trials measured oedema in different ways.

Now the caveats, which usually get left out.

Not a single passenger in any of those trials developed a symptomatic DVT. Not one had a pulmonary embolism. Nobody died. The clots counted were found by scanning people after the flight, not by anyone feeling unwell, and the review is explicit that a large share were asymptomatic. So the evidence shows that stockings reduce the number of small clots a scanner can find. Whether that means fewer of the events that actually harm people is not something these trials could answer; you would need an enormous number of participants to detect a difference in something that rare.

The reasonable conclusion: compression socks are cheap, harmless if correctly sized, and demonstrably reduce both symptomless clots and swollen ankles. Decent return for something that lives in a side pocket. They are not a medical necessity for a healthy person on a six hour hop, and anyone with a history of clotting or recent surgery should take advice from a doctor rather than a magazine about underwear.

The change in the hand luggage, and where you actually do it

This is the highest-value habit in long-haul travel and hardly anybody does it.

One clean brief, one pair of socks, one clean t-shirt, in a small pouch, in the bag that stays with you. That is it. It weighs nothing, it takes up the volume of a paperback, and it is the difference between arriving as a person and arriving as freight.

The where is what people get stuck on.

The aircraft lavatory is the obvious answer and worse than you think. Nowhere clean to put anything, a wet floor, an audience of six in the galley queue. If you must, go early in the descent while everyone is asleep, keep the clean items in the pouch until the last second, and never put a bare foot on that floor.

An airside shower is the right answer if you have access. Most major hubs have paid shower facilities airside and it is the best money in travel.

A transit hotel at hubs like Singapore, Doha or Istanbul, bookable by the hour. Overkill for one connection, transformative on a long one.

The gate area toilets after landing, usually far emptier than the ones in the terminal proper, and the pragmatic default.

The order matters. Change before immigration, not after. The queue is where the time goes.

The sink wash, done properly

You have landed, you are in a hotel room, and you have one pair of underwear that has done twelve hours. Wash it now, not in the morning.

Basin, warm water, whatever soap is there. Agitate for a minute, paying attention to the gusset and the waistband. Rinse until the water runs genuinely clear, which takes longer than you think; leftover detergent is what makes travel-washed garments feel stiff.

Then the part that determines whether it dries. Do not wring it, which wrecks the elastic. Lay it flat on a dry bath towel, roll the towel up with the garment inside, and stand on the roll. That drives out more water than any amount of twisting. Unroll, reshape, hang it in moving air.

When the bag does not arrive

It happens, and it happens most on tight connections through busy hubs, which is exactly where you least want it.

You can buy a shirt anywhere in the world in half an hour. The argument

None of this makes flying pleasant. Long-haul economy is not going to be pleasant and no fabric will fix it.

The point is that the first morning of a trip is the one that counts, and it is routinely wrecked by decisions made twenty hours earlier by a version of you who was thinking about passports rather than clothes. You arrive dehydrated, in a damp garment, with swollen ankles and a bag in Frankfurt, and write the whole thing off to jet lag.

Change three things. Wool instead of cotton next to your skin. A pouch with one clean set in the bag that stays with you. A sink wash the night you land.
