Briefs for the Office: The Tailoring Argument
Slim trousers ended the underwear debate years ago. Why briefs are the only correct choice under tailoring, and the three pairs that work hardest from 9 to 5.

There is a particular moment in a fitting room, usually in a light grey trouser under a downlight, when a man turns to check the back view and discovers two horizontal lines across his seat that he has apparently been wearing in public for several years.
The reaction is almost always the same, and almost always wrong. He decides the problem is that he is wearing underwear at all, and goes looking for something smaller, thinner or absent.
None of those solve it. The lines were not caused by a garment existing but by a specific piece of construction at its edge, and swapping to a different style built the same way produces the same lines.
A line shows through cloth when there is an abrupt change in thickness underneath it. Fabric drapes over a gradual change and reveals nothing; it tents over a sudden step and catches the light along the ridge. What you are seeing is not the underwear, it is the edge of the underwear, the point where several layers of fabric and a length of elastic are concentrated into a few millimetres.
A folded and stitched hem, which is what most mass market underwear uses at the leg opening, is the worst offender available. The fabric is turned under on itself, usually with a fine elastic threaded inside, then stitched down. At the hem you have double or triple the thickness plus a rubber core plus two rows of thread; immediately beside it, a single layer. That is about as abrupt a step as you can build into a knitted garment, and it is why the line lands in the same place on every pair you own. You are not hiding a garment. You are eliminating steps.
The industry solved this properly some years ago, and the marketing language around it is unhelpfully vague.
A bonded edge means the join is made with adhesive and heat rather than thread. Two pieces of fabric are held by a thin film of thermoplastic that melts, flows into both faces and cools. No stitch line, no folded allowance, so thickness at the join is barely greater than the fabric itself.
A laser cut edge, sometimes sold as raw cut or seamfree, means the fabric has been cut with a hot beam that seals the cut face as it goes, so it cannot fray and needs no turning under. The garment simply stops. Thickness at the edge is one layer, the theoretical minimum. Two warnings, because these are sold as miracles. A stitched hem degrades gradually over years, while a bonded edge holds perfectly until the adhesive lets go, usually after repeated hot washing, and then opens along a whole section at once, so wash cool and never tumble How to Wash Underwear Properly. This surprises people, and it is straightforward geometry.
A boxer brief ends on the mid thigh, where the cloth hangs close to the leg and a tailored trouser is narrowest below the seat. Put a thick elasticated hem there and the trouser has nowhere to go. A brief ends high on the leg, in the crease where thigh meets seat. That is a region the trouser cloth bridges rather than follows, because there is a natural hollow no woven trouser drapes into. An edge inside a hollow is an edge the cloth never touches, and an edge the cloth never touches cannot print through it.

Under a light or thin trouser, most men get the colour question exactly backwards.
The instinct is that white underwear will vanish under light trousers because white matches the trouser. It does not, because the trouser is not what you are seeing through. Light passes through a summer cotton, a linen, a pale wool or an unlined chino and reflects off whatever is beneath, and what is beneath is you. Skin is mid toned and moderately absorbent of light. White fabric is the most reflective thing you could place against it. The result is a bright patch with a hard border where the garment ends, and that border is far more visible from across a room than any hem.
Match the underwear to your skin, then, rather than to the trouser. A garment in mid brown, tan or taupe close to your own colouring reflects roughly what your skin reflects, so there is no luminance step for the cloth to reveal. Wardrobe departments have worked this way for decades. Grey is the sensible compromise, and genuinely much better than white. None of which is an argument against white underwear as such: under anything dark, lined or with weight it is invisible, and there are good reasons the colour became the default Why Underwear Is White.
The winter version of the problem is a trouser leg that climbs the calf and clings, usually in a suit, usually in an office, usually on the day it matters.
The mechanism is contact electrification, commonly called the triboelectric effect. When two insulating surfaces touch and separate, electrons transfer from one to the other, leaving one positively charged and the other negatively charged. Rubbing is not strictly required but helps, because friction increases the real contact area between surfaces that are microscopically rough. Once they carry opposite charges they attract, and that attraction is cling.
Which surface gains and which loses is described by the triboelectric series, an empirical ranking from materials that readily give up electrons to those that readily accept them. It is an experimental ordering rather than a fundamental constant, and published versions disagree on details, but the broad shape is consistent. Nylon and polyamide sit near the positive end, acrylic close behind, wool and silk moderately positive, cotton near the neutral middle, polyester on the negative side and polypropylene further negative still.
Trouble comes from pairing materials that sit far apart, because the greater the separation, the more charge transfers per contact. A polyester garment against a nylon trouser lining is close to the worst combination the average wardrobe contains. The other half of it is the air. Charge only accumulates if it cannot leak away, and humid air conducts far better than dry air, because of the thin film of moisture it leaves on every surface. Cotton and wool hold moisture inside the fibre; synthetics absorb nothing, so they build charge whatever the weather.
The fixes divide into those that reduce charge generation and those that help charge dissipate, and both work.
Change the pairing. The most effective single intervention, and free if you already own the right garment. Put cotton, merino or modal next to the skin under a wool trouser and the separation on the series collapses. Add moisture. A humidifier in a dry office does more than any garment change. At the emergency end, running slightly damp hands down the trouser leg discharges it instantly, by giving the charge a conductive path to equalise along.
Stop the tumble dryer. A dryer is a machine for rubbing insulating fabrics together in hot dry air, which is a near perfect static generator. Taking clothes out slightly damp, or line drying, removes the problem at source. Heat is also what destroys your waistbands, so this one pays a dividend.
Fabric softener and dryer sheets deposit a thin layer of cationic surfactant on the fibre. It lubricates, so rubbing generates less charge, and it attracts water, so what does form leaks away. Metal. Drawing a coat hanger down the inside of the trouser leg drains the charge to ground through your hand. Eccentric, immediate. What does not work: changing size, changing detergent, or the safety pin trick.
The last trouser problem is mechanical rather than electrical: a garment that will not stay where it was put.
A trouser lining is a very smooth woven fabric, viscose or acetate in a good suit and polyester in a cheap one, smooth deliberately, so the trouser slides over you rather than dragging. That same smoothness offers almost no friction against your underwear, so anything inclined to migrate migrates freely. An elasticated or bound leg opening grips the thigh with even, distributed tension and stays put; a folded hem with tired elastic grips unevenly, curls, and ropes into a cord that works its way up on every stride. If ride up is your problem in a lined trouser specifically, a cotton or modal garment stays put better than a slippery microfibre one fine merino brief.
Every check here can be run in a fitting room, and nobody runs them, because everyone assesses trousers standing still and facing forwards. Check the front in the worst light available, then turn ninety degrees and look at the profile of the thigh, where a boxer brief hem announces itself and a front view shows you nothing.
Then sit down. Sitting changes everything: the seat fabric goes into tension and thins, thigh circumference increases by several centimetres, and a hem that was invisible standing becomes a ridge across the front of the thigh. The received advice here is unusually poor. Men are told to wear less underwear, or none, in response to a problem caused entirely by hem construction and colour choice. They are told static is unavoidable in winter when it is a function of two materials and one humidity reading. They are told to buy a seamfree garment and then buy it a size too small. The real solutions are dull, specific and cheap. Move the edge into the hollow at the top of the thigh, or eliminate the edge with bonding. Match the garment to your skin rather than to the trouser. Put a hygroscopic fibre next to your skin in winter and stop tumble drying your suit trousers. Sit down before you pay.
None of that requires taste, courage or a smaller waist. It requires knowing which bit of the garment causes the thing you can see.
An abrupt change in thickness under the cloth, almost always at the leg opening or the waistband. Something close to your own skin tone, in mid brown, tan or taupe. Fastest fix in the moment: run slightly damp hands down the leg, or draw a metal coat hanger through it, both of which drain the charge. Longer term, wear cotton, modal or merino next to the skin under wool trousers instead of polyester, stop tumble drying, and raise the humidity in the room. Fabric softener works too, by leaving a lubricating coating that reduces charge generation and holds a little moisture, but keep it off performance fabrics.
